Hello my people!! Back at it again like Poochi and frenz!!!! For part 2 of this lil music review we’re gonna look at 5 more of the best gospel projects of 2020. If you haven’t checked out the previous review, then please be sure to check that out and let me know your thoughts!!

6. Kierra by Kierra Sheard-Kelly
The new Mrs. Sheard-Kelly’s voice dripsss with that oily gospel soul that truly runs through her blood. The daughter of the GREAT Karen Clarke-Sheard of the Clarke Sisters has definitely brought the sunshine in her own way with this project right here. The author of Big Bold and Beautiful: Owning the Woman God Made You to Be practices what she preaches as every record is uniquely Kierra, with big vocal just MADE for the church choir, lyrics full of truth and bold musical style choices. Better is for sure the track that gets my recommendation, barely edging out It Keeps Happening for me and Something Has To break as I do love a song that challenges every believer to go for better!

7. People by Jonathon McReynolds
Whew chile!!! This is one of those projects where I wonder if the artiste knew what the Lord did with them when they were creating their project. If I were to meet Mr. McReynolds, I’d love to just pick his brain about what it was like and what he felt was happening or would happen once this project dropped. Ladies and Gentlemen this one gets my personal NO SKIPS award; it’s hit after hit! Each song carries the Jonathon’s usual extremely authentic and relatable but clever lyrical stylings all while not compromising on godly truth or entertainment value. I recommend Situation, Cathedral, Grace, and People in that order!

8. I AM by Koryn Hawthorne
Representing for the nice clean gospel girls is Miss Koryn Hawthorne!! She’s another one I think just has a voice made for the church choir! Take a young woman, with, big, round mature vocals unafraid to be herself and play around with both mature and youthful styles and you get Speak to Me, Sunday and How Great Thou Art and Know You on the same project! We? Do love to see it!! I’ve truly enjoyed and been impacted by her work thus far and this album did not disappoint. I highly recommend Sunday as the message of having Jesus everyday is something I think all believers and even non-believers need to hear.

9. Bridges by Limoblaze and D.A. TRUTH
If you’re unfamiliar with these two artistes, then this Naija (Nigeria) and American mash up may seem a bit strange but as a fan familiar with their previous work I was super excited for these two to do a full project together. The bromance is rea with these two and the Lord has really used them well to put a motherland spin on the gospel and the Christian experience. I love that they didn’t hesitate to tackle issues such as the black American experience with racism in tracks like Intermission acknowledging that their struggle is not one God is blind to and offering hope to all the people dealing with it. The Jamaican in me is extremely proud to have Papa San featured on the project also, for that Intermission and Meantime get my recommendation.

10. Satisfied by Mercy Chinwo
This one’s from the Excess Love Queen herself!! Here we have another Naija (Nigeria) native coming through with some ministry through the sounds and language of her own people and she does so without any apology. I like to think music like hers represents a little glimpse of what black gospel music may have sounded like had slavery not happened…. but I digress. Miss Chinwo was also awarded the Sterling Award for International Artiste of the Year in 2020 and after listening to this project it easy to see why the people voted for her. And again, the Jamaican in me sings “From Liberia to Jamaica’ extra loud when Na You Dey Reign comes on, clearly, we’ve got a mutual love thing going on here. I strongly recommend Na You Dey Reign and Akamdinelu.
There you have it friends! My full 2020 top 10!! Honourable Recommendations go to HEATHEN by Gawvi, Portraits by CalledOut Music, Forever Amen by Steffany Gretzinger and Royalty by Tasha Cobbs. I must give a special shoutout to ALL the gospel artistes who dropped projects in 2020, you were key to the body of Christ in such a trying year, THANK YOU!
I hope you look at all these projects and be as moved, blessed, and challenged as I have been. Were these new or did you already love them? What are some of your favourites? I’d love to know, maybe I can add a few more faves to my playlist.
Until next time, remember, our present sufferings do not compare to the future glory to be revealed in us.
I definitely need to check out some of these hits lol I really can't keep up. Haha. But great stuff, Shannon! Looking forward to more.
