Waiting Well: Lessons from David

Text: 1 Sam 16:1-13, 1 Sam 23

Reflection:

What are some practical tips for waiting well?

David was promised the throne of Israel and kingship, yet he had to wait for Saul to be removed in order to claim his inheritance. Bible scholars place the estimated wait at approximately 15 years (15 years old to 30 years old!). We learn from David that we should be humble enough during the wait to listen for the voice of God. Throughout David's waiting years, he ran as a fugitive from Saul and lived as an outcast from his own kingdom. Yet he actively sought and listened for God. He enquired of the Lord for His will and direction before making decisions. David could have very easily, like many of us, said to himself; " well Lord, you're taking forever to give me the throne you promised me, so I will do my own thing now". Yet, even while having to wait years for the promises of God to be revealed, He remained faithful in seeking the covenant-keeping God.

He never became bitter during the wait. David could have become angry, and bitter towards God; questioning and complaining regarding the wait. After all, how could he be called to be king and yet be running for his life from another man on the throne? He remained steadfast in faith and refused to waver and doubt the faithfulness of God.

He maintained a fighting spirit. All throughout David's life and journeys, he was forced to fight. Have you ever been forced to fight? Have you ever had life or people or circumstances back you up so badly that you have to fight, scratch, and claw your way out? There are circumstances that can pile so high on top of you that you reckon with the reality that you have only two options, you either fight or you die. In life there are situations that you'll face where the odds are stacked against you and you either fight or give in. David could have given up many times. He could have grown weary when people cursed him or when Saul kept trying to kill him, or when both happened at the same time! {2 Samuel 15:13-17:22} He fought until the promise was not only his by promise, but until it was his by possession. Will you fight for your promise? Or will you give up and die in the wilderness?

Prayer

Lord, as you teach me to wait well, I ask your Holy Spirit to flood me with the peace

I need to be patient. Help me to seek your voice and wait to hear from you before I make any moves. Help me not to become bitter while I wait. I commit to remaining steady in my trust and not wavering in my faith in you Lord despite how long it takes to see the fulfillment of your promises to me. Give me a fighting spirit, to never quit and never give up while I'm waiting. Amen
